Merlot is a red grape variety originating in the Bordeaux wine region. It is subject to shatter (an accident at blooming time that prevents fertilization.) The thin and delicate skin of its berries fears grey rot. This variety agrees with limestone and clay soils. Wines produced from Merlot are supple, fruity and display blackcurrant and plum aromas. They can be served young. Merlot is cultivated and used all over the world for its easy blending, particularly among Bordeaux wines.
